Black Joy

Scenography for a music theatre play

Black Joy Scenography

On stage, a space emerges where personal stories come together with music, dance, and humor. It is a place where pride is celebrated and resilience becomes tangible. The message is clear: our joy is our protest.

The set design takes the form of the inside of a jukebox, filled with moving elements that bring the stage to life. One of the key inspirations was the juke joint from the film Sinners: an old sawmill transformed into a gathering place for music and dance within the local Black community.

The warm color palette and expressive use of light from this reference directly influenced the design, leading to a vibrant set with multiple colors and visible lighting elements on stage.
